Vietnamese police shut down $1bn online gambling operation

arrested

In what is believed to be the largest ever online betting operation in Vietnam, the gambling organisation was operating in a “sophisticated manner that had been so difficult to detect,” the police commented.

The raids took place across the country last week and police discovered hundreds of thousands of accounts tied to a ring worth an estimated $1.28bn.

Of the 22 who were arrested, 12 are thought to be the main organisers.

Police declined to comment about any further information, as investigations remain ongoing.

Vietnam recently began to relax its rules on gambling, allowing Vietnamese residents to bet in casinos on a trial basis.

Last week, former Chief Inspector of the Vietnamese Information Ministry, Dang Anh Tuan, was arrested for his involvement in an online gambling ring.
