Newcastle United Football Club has released a statement regarding the investigations against its midfielder, Sandro Tonali, amidst illegal betting allegations.

Tonali was signed at the start of July for £55m ($66.9m), transferring from AC Milan to Newcastle United FC that was due to run until 2028.

However, it was revealed last week that both Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo had been dropped from the Italian national men’s football team due to a betting probe.

A spokesperson said: “Newcastle United can confirm that Sandro Tonali is subject to investigation by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and Italian Football Federation (FIGC) in relation to illegal betting activity.

“Sandro is fully engaging with the investigation and will continue to cooperate with all relevant authorities.

“He and his family will continue to receive the club’s full support.”

Newcastle United went on to explain that due to the ongoing legal processes, neither Tonali nor the club would be able to offer further comments at this time.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced that both men would miss the upcoming games against Malta and England.

The FIGC said: “The midfielders would not be in the correct frame of mind to face the upcoming matches.

“Regardless of the nature of the events, considering that the two players are not in the necessary condition to face the matches scheduled for the next few days, the Federation has decided, also for their protection, to allow them to return to their respective clubs.”
